Fire alarm communicator lines, replaced without opening the panel
The DACT keeps dialing the way it always has. Underneath it, copper is replaced by supervised analog dial tone on 5G/LTE or fiber, with battery backup and a documented signal test through to your monitoring centre.
The short answer
A fire alarm communicator – the DACT inside the panel – was designed to seize a copper pair and dial the supervising station. Managed POTS replacement puts a device where that pair used to terminate, presents the same analog dial tone with correct loop current and Contact ID handling, and carries the call over cellular or the building network. The panel is not opened, the programmed numbers do not change, and the path is supervised continuously. Two alarm lines run $68 per month all-in.
Two legitimate routes
Replace the line. The panel and its DACT stay exactly as installed, and only the transport underneath changes. This is the fastest path, it needs no panel programming, and it avoids reopening a listed fire alarm system that is currently signed off. For most buildings facing a copper disconnect notice, this is the answer.
Replace the communicator. A listed cellular or IP communicator replaces the DACT entirely. It is the better long-term design when the panel is already being modernised, when the alarm contractor is on site for other work, or when the monitoring centre prefers it. It costs more up front and it is alarm-contractor work, not telecom work.
We do not sell the second option and we will say so plainly when it is the better fit for your building. The audit tells you which of your panels fall into which category before anyone quotes anything.
Non-negotiables
Anything carrying fire alarm signalling has to clear all of these before the copper is released.
- Supervised path. Failure of the transmission path is detected and annunciated, not discovered at the next inspection.
- Power resilience. Battery standby of up to 24 hours so a power cut does not take the signalling path with it.
- Faithful analog behaviour. Correct dial tone, loop current, DTMF and Contact ID handshake timing – alarm dialers are far less forgiving than a phone.
- Verified receipt. Signals confirmed received at the supervising station, documented, before disconnect.
- AHJ alignment. The design is discussed with the authority having jurisdiction and the alarm contractor, in advance.
Method
How an alarm line cutover runs
Alarm lines are sequenced separately from ordinary lines, because the test loop involves a third party and the failure mode is unacceptable.
Identify the panel and the path
Panel make, DACT type, programmed numbers, monitoring centre, account number, and how many lines are genuinely in use today.
Coordinate all three parties
Alarm contractor, monitoring centre and building. Nothing is cut over until the test window is agreed with all of them.
Port and stage
Numbers are ported so the monitoring centre's records stay valid, and the device is shipped preconfigured for the panel it will serve.
Account on test
The monitoring centre places the account on test so transmitted alarms do not dispatch during verification.
Transmit and confirm
Alarm, supervisory and trouble signals are sent from the panel and confirmed received, with timestamps captured.
Document and release
Results go into the project record for the AHJ and the insurer, and only then is the copper line disconnected.
Cost
Alarm lines are usually the most overpriced copper in the building
