Elevator phone monitoring: know the line is dead before a passenger does

Copper gave you no visibility at all. A monitored line reports its own dial tone, transport, battery and call path continuously, and raises an alert in minutes rather than at the next inspection.

The short answer

Elevator phone monitoring is continuous supervision of the emergency line – dial tone, transport, battery and the ability to complete a call – with automatic alerting when any of them fails. It is not the answering service, and it is not the monthly test call. It is included in the LineBridge monthly price on every device we deploy.

The failure mode nobody plans for

Almost every elevator phone incident follows the same shape. The line failed at some point – a cut pair, a carrier fault, a dead battery, an unpaid account nobody could map to a building – and nothing announced it. The failure was discovered by a passenger, an inspector, or an elevator technician doing a routine test weeks later.

Test calls do not close that gap. A quarterly test tells you the line worked on one morning in three months. The rest of the quarter is an assumption. For a life-safety line that is a strange thing to assume, and it is the single most common finding when we audit an existing analog estate.

Replacing copper is the opportunity to fix it. The device that presents dial tone is also a computer on a network, so it can report on itself constantly. That is the capability copper never had and the reason a lot of buildings end up better off after the migration than they were before it.

Test calls versus supervision

Monthly test call
Manual, scheduled, proves one moment in time, requires a person in the cab, and produces a paper record that can be up to a month stale.
Continuous supervision
Automatic, always on, proves current state, needs nobody on site, and produces an exportable history covering every line for every day.
Both together
Supervision catches the line and transport faults. The periodic in-cab test still confirms the phone, the button, the speaker and the answering point – so keep it, and stop relying on it as your only signal.

What we actually watch

Six signals per device, sampled continuously, with thresholds tuned so alerts mean something and get acted on.

Dial tone per line

Each analog port is checked for correct dial tone, loop current and ring capability – not just whether the box is powered on.

Transport state

Cellular signal quality, carrier registration and wired circuit health, sampled continuously so degradation is visible before it becomes an outage.

Battery health

Charge state and battery condition, so a cell that will not hold the required standby time is replaced before the next power cut, not after it.

Call path to the network

Periodic verification that a call can actually be completed to the public telephone network, which catches upstream faults a local dial-tone check misses.

Device and enclosure

Power loss, reboots, tamper and temperature conditions in machine rooms and unconditioned spaces.

Configuration drift

Changes to programmed numbers or settings on the device are logged, so nobody silently redirects an emergency line.

What happens when something breaks

An alert nobody routes is only marginally better than no alert at all, so the escalation path is agreed during onboarding.

    The device or the platform sees the fault – lost dial tone, failed registration, battery below threshold, call path unreachable.

    Self-heal

    Where possible the device recovers on its own: carrier failover, path switch, or port reset, with the event logged.

    Alert

    If it does not clear, an alert goes to your nominated contacts and to our operations team at the same time.

  4. Step 4

    Resolve

    We work the carrier, the transport, or the hardware. Failed devices are replaced under the monthly fee.
